The 4C’s of Diamond Buying
A Simple Guide to Choosing the Perfect Natural Diamond
Buying a diamond is a special moment — whether it marks an engagement, anniversary, celebration, or personal milestone. Understanding the 4C’s helps you make an informed and confident decision when selecting a natural diamond.
The globally recognised 4C’s are:
- Cut
- Colour
- Clarity
- Carat Weight
Together, these characteristics determine a diamond’s beauty, rarity, and value.
1. Cut — The Sparkle of the Diamond
The cut is often considered the most important of the 4C’s because it directly affects how brilliantly a diamond sparkles.
A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating exceptional brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Even a diamond with excellent colour and clarity can appear dull if the cut is poor.
Diamonds are graded from:
- Excellent
- Very Good
- Good
- Fair
- Poor
For maximum sparkle and beauty, we generally recommend choosing Excellent or Very Good cut grades.
What Cut Influences:
- Brightness and sparkle
- Light reflection
- Overall visual beauty
- Perceived size of the diamond
Jewelite Recommendation:
Prioritise cut quality first. A beautifully cut diamond will appear more lively and radiant, even at lower colour or clarity grades.
2. Colour — How White a Diamond Appears
Diamond colour refers to the presence of natural tint within a white diamond. The less colour a diamond has, the rarer and more valuable it is.
The industry standard grading scale ranges from:
- D — Completely colourless
- E–F — Near colourless and exceptionally white
- G–H — Near colourless with excellent value
- I–J — Slight warmth visible in some lighting
Most diamonds used in fine jewellery fall within the D–H range.
Understanding Diamond Colour:
- Colourless diamonds appear icy white
- Slightly warmer diamonds may show faint yellow tones
- The setting metal can influence how colour appears
Jewelite Recommendation:
For the best balance between beauty, whiteness, and value, we generally recommend G–H colour diamonds. These diamonds appear beautifully white to the eye while offering excellent overall value, especially in white gold or platinum settings.
Understanding Fluorescence
Some natural diamonds display a soft glow when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. This natural characteristic is called fluorescence.
Fluorescence is graded as:
- None
- Faint
- Medium
- Strong
- Very Strong
In most cases, fluorescence is not visible under normal lighting. However, strong fluorescence in certain diamonds can occasionally create a slightly hazy or milky appearance.
Jewelite Recommendation on Fluorescence :
For the best balance between beauty and consistency, we generally recommend diamonds with None to Faint fluorescence.
3. Clarity — Nature’s Unique Fingerprint
Clarity measures the tiny natural characteristics formed within a diamond during its creation deep beneath the earth over billions of years.
These characteristics are called:
- Inclusions (internal)
- Blemishes (external)
Most are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye.
Common clarity grades include:
- FL (Flawless)
- IF (Internally Flawless)
- VVS1–VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included)
- VS1–VS2 (Very Slightly Included)
- SI1–SI2 (Slightly Included)
Important to Know :
Many inclusions are only visible under magnification and do not affect a diamond’s everyday beauty.
Jewelite Recommendation:
We generally recommend selecting diamonds graded VS2 or higher for fine jewellery. Most premium fine jewellery brands avoid going below VS2 clarity to maintain exceptional visual appearance and overall quality standards.
4. Carat Weight — The Size of the Diamond
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, not necessarily its visible size.
1 carat = 0.20 grams
As carat weight increases, diamonds become increasingly rare, which significantly affects pricing.
Important Factors
- Two diamonds of equal carat weight can appear different in size depending on cut quality
- Well-cut diamonds often appear larger and brighter
- Shape also affects perceived size
Popular Diamond Sizes :
- 0.50 ct
- 1.00 ct
- 1.50 ct
- 2.00 ct+
Jewelite Recommendation :
Rather than focusing only on size, choose a balanced combination of cut, colour, clarity, and carat for the most beautiful result.
